We Ain’t Buying It.
Using Our Dollars to Defend Democracy, Black Communities, and Economic Justice
Every dollar we spend is a statement of what we value. And right now, too many corporations are using our money to stay silent while our communities face unprecedented attacks.
That’s why Black Voters Matter is teaming up with a powerful coalition—including the Working Families Party and 50501—for a nationwide campaign called “We Ain’t Buying It.” This multi-racial, multi-generational consumer-led action is designed to remind corporations: your profits depend on our communities, and we will hold you accountable.
Why This Matters
Corporations like Amazon, Target, and Home Depot have made billions while communities like ours face targeted attacks on our rights and livelihoods. Over the past year:
SNAP benefits for millions of low-income families have been threatened, disproportionately affecting Black and Brown households.
ICE raids and family separations continue, with communities living under fear and uncertainty.
Corporate promises to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have often been abandoned when political pressure hits.
This isn’t just about profits. It’s about complicity in injustice. When companies prioritize political convenience over human rights, they directly undermine the communities that built their wealth.
“From the day he stepped foot into office, Donald Trump has done everything he can to tear apart the fabric of our communities… But we ain’t buying it.”
— LaTosha Brown, Co-Founder, Black Voters Matter
The Power of Our Collective Spending
The upcoming holiday season isn’t just about shopping—it’s a chance to exert real power. Black Friday and Cyber Monday alone are expected to generate $80 billion in sales, with online sales projected at $253.4 billion from November through December.
If communities like ours shift where we spend even a fraction of that money, we can send a clear message to corporations: you cannot profit from our labor, culture, and communities while enabling injustice.
What “We Ain’t Buying It” Looks Like
We’re calling on everyone to pause spending at major retailers that have abandoned commitments to democracy, civil rights, and DEI during the week of Nov. 28–Dec. 1. Instead, we’ll:
Support small, Black-, minority-, and immigrant-owned businesses that share our values.
Redirect dollars to companies that affirm human rights and stand firmly against discrimination.
Take the pledge to be a conscious consumer and hold corporations accountable.
Amplify the campaign online and in conversation—our collective voice matters as much as our collective dollars.
“Working people are the backbone of our economy. If corporations like Home Depot, Target, and Amazon are going to collude with the administration and enable its attacks on our communities, then we’ll spend our dollars elsewhere. It’s really that simple.”
— Nelini Stamp, Working Families Party
Why This Isn’t Just a Holiday Protest
Economic pressure is not about guilt—it’s about power. When we choose where our money goes, we define who succeeds and who fails.
Black communities have always been central to America’s economy, yet we are continually targeted by policies that strip resources, limit opportunity, and increase surveillance and policing. This campaign demonstrates: we don’t have to be powerless.
“‘We Ain’t Buying It’ isn’t about guilt, it’s about power. When we pause our spending together, we expose just how dependent these systems are on our everyday choices.”
— Glo Sahay, 50501
